Raised in the spotlight and yet a recluse, the legendary Jackson was a perfect subject for Ron Galella, the godfather of paparazzi. Galella shot Michael from his early days in the Jackson 5, right up until his death in 2009. Finding intimate moments with the star offstage, he captured candid portraits of the man behind the mask. He was able to find the personal side of Michael with his many celebrity friends, his family and Bubbles. This inimitable body of work is a lasting tribute to his life.

moonwalk the book by michael jackson

In 1983, while Michael Jackson was making the epic music video for “Thriller,” two editors at Doubleday approached the King of Pop about writing his memoirs. Five years later, while he was in the midst of his Bad world tour, the autobiography, called “Moonwalk,” finally hit bookshelves.

It almost never did. Shortly before it was to go to press, Jackson hesitated, fearful that in his quest to clear up all the rumors about his life, he had revealed too much. In the end, though, he allowed publication to proceed, and the book became a best-seller. A reissued “Moonwalk” comes out on Tuesday, and MTV News has obtained excerpts from the book, in which Jackson offers his frank thoughts on plastic surgery, drugs, depression, being abused as a child and more.

On his relationship with his father: “He’d sit at home with us every day after school and rehearse us. We’d perform for him and he’d critique us. If you messed up, you got hit, sometimes with a belt, sometimes with a switch. My father was real strict with us — real strict. … Dad would make me so mad and hurt that I’d try to get back at him and get beaten all the more. I’d take a shoe and throw it at him, or I’d just fight back, swinging my fists. That’s why I got it more than all my brothers combined. I would fight back and my father would kill me, just tear me up.”

On coping with fame, loneliness and depression: “Many girls want to know what makes me tick — why I live the way I live or do the things I do — trying to get inside my head. They want to rescue me from loneliness, but they do it in such a way that they give me the impression they want to share my loneliness, which I wouldn’t wish on anybody, because I believe I’m one of the loneliest people in the world. … Success definitely brings on loneliness. It’s true. People think you’re lucky, that you have everything. They think you can go anywhere and do anything, but that’s not the point. One hungers for the basic stuff. I’ve learned to cope better with these things now and I don’t get nearly as depressed as I used to.”

On plastic surgery: “I’d like to set the record straight right now. I have never had my cheeks altered or my eyes altered. I have not had my lips thinned, nor have I had dermabrasion or a skin peel. All of these charges are ridiculous. If they were true, I would say so, but they aren’t. I have had my nose altered twice and I recently added a cleft to my chin, but that is it. Period. I don’t care what anyone else says — it’s my face and I know it. … They say I’ve had my eyes widened, that I want to look more white. More white? What kind of statement is that? I didn’t invent plastic surgery. It’s been around for a long time. A lot of very fine, very nice people have had plastic surgery.”

Michael Jackson and his bestfriend Bubbles

On not taking drugs: “I myself have never tried drugs — no marijuana, no cocaine, nothing. I mean, I haven’t even tried these things. Forget it. This isn’t to say we were never tempted. We were musicians doing business during an era when drug use was common. I don’t mean to be judgmental — it’s not even a moral issue for me — but I’ve seen drugs destroy too many lives to think they’re anything to fool with.”

On marrying and having children: “I believe in relationships. One day I know I’ll find the right woman and get married myself. I often look forward to having children; in fact, it would be nice to have a big family, since I come from such a large one myself. In my fantasy about having a large family, I imagine myself with 13 children.”

On spending time with children: “That’s what I love about being with kids. They notice everything. They aren’t jaded. They get excited by things we’ve forgotten to get excited about anymore. They are so natural too, so un-self-conscious. I love being around them. There always seems to be a bunch of kids over at the house and they’re always welcome. They energize me — just being around them. They look at everything with such fresh eyes, such open minds. That’s part of what makes kids so creative. They don’t worry about the rules.”

We understand MJ, things change as we get older…

I believe performers should try to be strong as an example to their audiences. It’s staggering what a person can do if they only try. If you’re under pressure, play off that pressure and use it to advantage to make whatever you’re doing better. Performers owe it to people to be strong and fair.

Often in the past performers have been tragic figures. A lot of truly great people have suffered or died because of pressure or drugs, especially liquor. It’s so sad. You feel cheated as a fan that you didn’t get to watch them evolve as they grew older. One can’t help but wondering what performances Marilyn Monroe would have put in or what Jimi Hendrix might have done in the 1980s.

A lot of celebrities say they don’t want their children to go into show business. I can understand their feelings, but I don’t agree with them. If I had a son or daughter, I’d say, “By all means, be my guest. Step right in there. If you want to do it, do it.”

To me, nothing is more important than making people happy, giving them a release from their problems and worries, helping them to lighten their load. I want them to walk away from a performance I’ve done saying, “That was great. I want to go back again. I had a great time.” To me, that’s what it’s all about. That’s wonderful. That’s why I don’t understand when some celebrities say they don’t want their kids in the business.

I think they say that because they’ve been hurt themselves. I can understand that. I’ve been there too.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach writes this article in his HUFFINGTON POST COLUMN

Posted on September 25, 2009 02:09 PM

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach tries to redeem and justify himself as the book he has written ‘The Michael Jackson Tapes’ reignites the EVIL MEDIA WITCH HUNT that made Michael Jackson so so sad…with friends like these who needs enemies!

Rabbi Shmuley & Michael Jackson 1

It was bizarre seeing this morning how hundreds of news sources on the Internet alleged that Michael Jackson admired Hitler and considered him a genius. Nothing could be further from the truth and these scandalous allegations are all based on a simple misrepresentation of a quote from Michael in my book The Michael Jackson Tapes: A Tragic Icon Reveals His Soul in Intimate Conversation. The book debuted only this morning on NBC’s “Today” Show (scroll down to watch). But before I even had the chance to discuss it in the first TV interview, this serious mis-characterization of Michael was spreading everywhere unchecked.

Here is what Michael actually said, as found in our conversations, which were recorded with Michael’s enthusiastic consent for the express purpose of publication in this book:

Hitler was a genius orator. He was [able] to make that many people turn and change and hate. He had to be a showman and he was. Before he would speak, he would pause, drink a bit of water, and then he would clear his throat, and look around. It was what an entertainer would do trying to work out how to play his audience. He would go into this fury of the first words he would say and he would hit them hard. But where did he come from? I know he failed school and he wanted to be an architect. He failed a lot of things. But I think it all happened in prison, the whole Mein Kampf thing, didn’t it?

Not only is there nothing controversial in what Michael is saying, but the point has been made by countless authoritative historians. Hitler was a master showman. He was indeed a brilliant orator who used his considerable charisma to stoke an inferno of hate. It is well known that he practiced his speeches in front of mirrors and had photographers take snapshots of him in different poses that he later studied to determine which were the most effective. He was an evil genius who employed every facet of a darkened soul to bring out the beast in man. And Michael is insightful in pointing out how Hitler studied his audience in order to gain mastery over them the way an entertainer would. It is very surprising that such a straightforward comment has become so controversial.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach releases recordings of conversations he had with the late King of Pop. Jackson fans had the opportunity to hear these never-before-released recordings of the Gloved One in his own words on Friday, Sept. 25 2009 on “Dateline,” when Rabbi Shmuley sat down with Meredith Vieira in an exclusive interview, prior to the release of his book: The Michael Jackson Tapes: A Tragic Icon Reveals His Soul in Intimate Conversation. The rabbi recorded these conversations with Jackson’s permission between 1999 and 2001.

“It was Michael’s desperate wish that our conversations be produced and the book be published so that his heart might be known to a public he understood was greatly suspicious of him.“

That’s bullshit. Michael was an intensely private man. He wrote his own autobiography. If he had wanted the world to know his private thoughts, feelings and anguish, he had ample opportunity to do so. But he didn’t. I doubt Michael knew you were taping his conversations, much less urge you to publish his innermost thoughts. If he was so desperate, why did you wait till he’s dead? Because now he can’t sue you, right?

You are a bloodsucking leech, Shmuley. Why don’t you tell everyone the real reason why Michael dumped you? Because you stole money from the Heal the Kids Foundation, that’s why. And you call yourself a spiritual leader!

May God give you back a double dose of what you did to Michael Jackson.

Rabbi publishes a book about Michael Jackson
26-Sep-2009
Written by: Domonique Hume

Rabbi makes book about Michael’s flaws, how sad.

Michael Jackson’s former adviser Rabbi Shmuley Boteach published a book. In the book he talks about Michael’s fear of growing old, him appearing to be abusing drugs, and cosmetic surgery about a decade before he died.

Before anyone purchases this book I want you to think, “Why did Michael shut Boteach out of his life?” Michael thought Boteach was his friend, but Boteach allegedly back stabbed him and stole money from his charity.

Everyone knows that Michael had no intention for any of his dirty laundry to be aired for millions to see. Boteach just wants to be known.

I thought that whenever you have a spiritual adviser all the information that is talked about between the adviser and the patient is confidential. Boteach if you think his book will make you famous you are a serious problems. All you will be getting is 10 minutes of fame. once your ten minutes is over everyone will forget who Rabbi Shumuley Boteach is. Have you ever heard “what goes around comes around”? well its true.

This just shows that you can never let your guide down because their is someone always ready to tackle you. Celebrities especially like Michael most of the time never have real friend. People will do anything for fame. If you are a real Michael fan you wouldn’t even think about buying his degrading book.

Wife Lisa Maire & Michael Jackson 4
According to Lisa herself, Jackson was a wonderful lover. He was, she said, ‘very hot’ in bed.”

From their very first date, at a dinner party staged by a mutual friend, Michael and Lisa hit it off. Raised at her father’s impregnable home, Graceland, she had much in common with the world’s most famous pop star, cloistered away in Neverland. Both had been sheltered from the real world, missed out on their childhoods and were mistrustful of outsiders. They believed they were soul mates. Michael was openly flirtatious, and Lisa was impressed by his private candour and normality. As they talked, she began to feel she was seeing the real Michael, the man behind the mask. His sexuality, admittedly, still seemed ambiguous, but he was soon kissing her fairly passionately. She was certainly attracted to him. Lisa liked strange guys, with an edge. And who had more of an edge than Michael?

He and Lisa appear to have had an intense and active sex life. She told a friend that he was ‘hot stuff in bed’ and ‘amazing’  -  and she should know, the friend added, because ‘she’s been around’. Nevertheless, some of his habits were a little odd.

‘Michael liked her to wear jewellery in bed. They were into role-playing games, although Lisa would never say who was playing what kind of role. ‘The first time, she went to turn on the lights afterwards, and he leapt out of bed and ran into the bathroom so she wouldn’t see his body. He emerged 20 minutes later, in full make-up and wearing a silk robe. Then they went at it again.

This report sounds so ‘out there’… Where does this stuff come from? Readers your thoughts….

Unauthorized biography

Almost two decades ago, an actress friend and I posed as a grieving couple at a grave site at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Glendale. I was being wooed to write an unauthorized biography about the world’s most mysterious man since Howard Hughes, and I had insisted on at least getting a glimpse of the subject, if even from a distance, before I signed on.

Blond Decoy

As it turned out, I would have a face-to-face encounter with Michael Jackson himself, if only for a fleeting moment. He was among the Jacksons getting out of a nearby limousine to attend his grandmother’s burial, and his path to her grave site took him past us. When he was inches away, he slowed almost to a stop for a split-second and looked at us. My friend, a striking blonde from  a popular TV show, could have that affect on people, which is why I asked her to join me.

Enter Michael Jackson
Michael was dressed all in black, sporting a black fedora, and his trademark black curls dangled over his forehead. He wasn’t wearing the surgical mask that had become a part of his wardrobe, and for an instant our faces couldn’t have been more than a foot apart. The man looked like an alien. The skin was pasty. His eyes were lifeless. The famous nose job and jaw implant looked ruddy and rubbery. The only sign of color was the pinkish gloss on his lips. I half wondered if he wasn’t wearing a mask. He walked on to his grandmother’s grave, and I momentarily made eye contact with the person in their mourning party who had tipped me off that Michael would be there – the person who wanted me to co-author the biography of Michael with her.

Name of Book – Michael: From Motown to the Moon

Enid Jackson, the estranged wife of Michael’s older brother Jackie, nodded to me, and I acknowledged her. This was how I had finally agreed to write “Michael: From Motown to the Moon,” a 100,000-word book that was soon commissioned by William Morrow & Co. for a six-figure advance. The book was never published for legal reasons and Enid died in 1997. But the book deal set off an 18-month period of lengthy tape-recorded interview sessions with Enid and an array of Jackson family friends, disgruntled employees, former employees, lovers and ex-lovers. As they say, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and Enid was that woman.

Michael Jackson Book, The life of a Legend

Michael Jackson Book, The life of a Legend

Product Description
Michael Jackson was one of those rare human beings who can truly be described as a legend. As with Elvis and John Lennon, everyone will remember where they were when they heard about the death of Michael Jackson. He was just fifty when he died, but had become a superstar by the time he was eleven, ensuring his music was part of the fabric of everyone s life.

Though his days of greatest success were behind him, Jackson was standing on the threshold of what could well have been one of the biggest comebacks in showbiz history. It wasn t to be, but the music, sales figures and the number of current stars who queued to pay tribute to his influence underlined the fact that, for all his controversial personal quirks, Michael Jackson was indeed one of the greats.

This picture-packed tribute, charts the life of a legend, from his earliest days as a hyperactive child protégé fronting family group the Jackson Five, to the assured superstar looking out from the cover of Thriller, still the best-selling album of all time.
