MTV.com Writes…
On Friday (December 18), MTV News named Michael Jackson the Man of the Year, and not just because his death was the biggest story of 2009. In passing, he reminded us all of his formidable legacy — as a musician, a showman and a cultural icon. He revolutionized the world of music videos, wowed fans around the world and, somewhere along the way, helped a fledgling cable channel called MTV to establish a foothold in the world.
And for all those reasons — not to mention a few more — Jackson’s surviving brothers think MTV News made the right call.
“I think it’s great, because Mike was a pioneer,” Jermaine Jackson said. “I really feel he put MTV on the map because of his contributions to music. You made the right choice, definitely.”
Marlon Jackson agreed, though he added that Michael should also be remembered for something else — his charitable work, most of which he did not participate in because he knew it would earn him headlines, but because it was simply the right thing to do.
“There are so many other things too. Michael and the brothers, when we were the Jackson 5, used to go to children’s hospitals, and that hasn’t stopped,” Marlon said. “And a lot of people didn’t know about all the different charities he paid for — a lot of celebrities, when they had passed and could not afford to bury themselves, he would pay for it. The Lord puts you in the position to help others, and that’s part of helping others.”

Mark Writes…
Originally published in People Monthly, The Caribbean Magazine, April-May 1978.
I have taken the liberty of tidying the writing on this story, which reflects the capabilities and observations of a much younger me, a writer at the beginning of his career, some 31 years my junior. Some of the excesses failed to improve the core story, which is reproduced here 99 percent intact, with most of the lesser warts still in place.
Mark Lyndersay, June 27, 2009.
The Article Begins….
The very reticent Claude Martineau has been in promotions, ironically, for almost all his teenage and adult life.
In his time, he has promoted fetes and brought National Music Supplies Ltd to commercial success. A couple of years ago, he and his brother Frank formed a company called Spektakula Promotions, and along with some other capable individuals, brought Millie Jackson, Ace Cannon and Jimmy Smith to local audiences in quick succession.
On the night of February 22, 1978, they executed their coup de grace, with the arrival of The Jacksons in Trinidad and Tobago. This is the story of what happened while they were here, and it is, ultimately, a story about us.
Meeting the people…
It took quite a while to catch up with The Jacksons. On the second night of their stay, a special function was held for them to meet with local musicians. It started out, and remained, a social affair, with attitudes ranging from those who wanted to chat with each and every one of the Jacksons as soon as possible, for as long as possible, to those who stood to one side and were conspicuously cool.
Little Randy Jackson’s face looked like it was modelled after Dennis the Menace and he was frantically bored. He drifted uncomfortably from brother to brother, eventually drifting into earshot.
“Is there going to be a show tonight?” he was asking plaintively.
Then Penny.
Instant melee.
All man Jack want penny autograph, want to take out picture with Penny. Photographer moves in. Excuse me Mr Trotman. Bill? Could you move a little to one side? Please?
“I ain’t moving! Look Michael there, move him nah. Look Marlon there, move him nah. But no. Is always excuse me Mr Trotman, would you step to one side Bill. No! I tell you I ain’t moving.”
Who can argue with that logic?
Performance
Some of us remembered The Stylistics from way back when. But their performance is just a fuzzy memory of flashy movements. The Jacksons were real, immediate, and very, very slick.

Opportunity of a lifetime: It was the best audition anyone could have. Second place winner in the Junior Calypso Competition at St Martin’s RC Joel Landeau got a chance to perform for the Jacksons. The song was titled “90 and come back again”.

Spektakula Promotions Frank Martineau, (Photo Added) who along with his brother Claude brought them to T&T on that now historic visit in 1978, said that he actually remembers very little, about the many places the brothers were taken to visit. Michael Jackson he remembers was ’very shy, introverted and very protected.’
The brothers however willingly met with the young people of T&T.
Frank remembers the brothers valued their privacy and has this anecdote:
’The brothers were sitting around the pool and a member of our security team pulled up a chair to sit with them and the brothers were like ’excuse me’ and he had to leave them to talk. We used to laugh about that a long time after,’ Frank reminisced.
Their father did not accompany them, but there was a ’big, red, man’ with them who people mistook for Joe Jackson, Frank said.

A special TV show called ‘The Rock ‘N’ Roll Sports Classic’ was originally aired on Wednesday, May 3rd 1978. Basically, 2 teams of entertainers from the seventies compete against each other for charity. The Jacksons were on the Blue Team (East). The Jackson’s team won with 332 points. The losing team, which wore yellow (West) lost with 265 points. Apparently, a charitable contribution of $20,000 was given to the University of California, U.S.A.
