The Jackson Family with Gamble and Huff

The Jacksons recorded their first two albums after leaving Motown in Philadelphia with Gamble and Huff songs and the Philadelphia International production crew. When the Jacksons came to PIR, they were transitioning away from the brand name of the Jackson Five.

In 1976 and 1977, Gamble and Huff produced and co-wrote songs for the albums The Jacksons and Going Places, as part of a double imprint deal with CBS/Epic Records, the Jacksons’ new label. Several hit songs came out of that production effort, including “Enjoy Yourself” The Jacksons - Michael Jackson: The Ultimate Collection - Enjoy Yourself and “Let Me Show You the Way to Go.” The Jacksons - Love - Show You the Way to Go

GAMBLE & HUFF and Jacksons Philadelphia International Records 1

The legendary producers filmed interviews they carried out with Jackson and his brothers while recording the Jackson 5′s first post-Motown albums, The Jacksons and Going Places, in the mid-1970s, and now they’re releasing the unseen footage on their website.

The short film features an interview with the Jacksons, which took place a day after they met their hero Muhammad Ali.

And there’s a very sweet moment as Michael starts interviewing house producer Dexter Wansel’s two-year-old son on camera, asking, ‘Is that your daddy? Is that your Daddy right there? Let me see you dance. Can you dance? You can’t dance? Can you sing? He can’t dance, Dex?’

The film footage has brought back wonderful memories for Gamble & Huff.

A joint statement from them reads, ‘Michael was a great and wonderful artist and performer. We were privileged and honored to record him and his brothers here at Philadelphia International Records… We know his music and legacy will live on for a very long time.’

R-Kelly Michael Jackson

“You Are Not Alone”, released in August 1995, is the second single from Michael Jackson’s album HIStory. The R&B ballad was written by R. Kelly in response to difficult times in his personal life. He then forwarded a bare demo tape to Jackson, who liked the song and decided to produce it with Kelly.

“You Are Not Alone” is an R&B ballad about love and isolation. The song was written by R. Kelly and produced by Kelly and Jackson. Kelly wrote the song after the loss of close people in his life. Kelly was delighted to be able to work with his idol, explaining “I was psyched … I feel I could have done his whole album. Not being selfish. I was just that geeked about it. It was an experience out of this world … It’s amazing to know that five years ago I was writing songs in a basement in the ghetto and now I’m writing for Michael Jackson … I’d be a fool not to say it’s a dream come true. Jackson contacted Kelly to see if he had any material available. Kelly forwarded a tape recording of the song and Jackson then agreed to work with Kelly on the piece. On the tape sent to Jackson, Kelly sung “You Are Not Alone” mimicking Jackson’s vocal style, explaining, “I think I am him. I become him. I want him to feel that as well.” Jackson found the interpretation amusing. They spent the last week of November 1994 together in the studio working on the track.

Jackson explained that he instantly liked the song, but listened to it twice before making his final decision. Although the song was written by Kelly, Jackson was adamant that the production should be a collaborative effort amongst the two musicians. The tape sent to him had no harmony or modulations, so Jackson added a choir in the final portion and added a sense of climax and structure to the final piece.

Teddy Reily andmj

Producer Teddy Riley has given weight to LaToya Jackson’s belief that her brother Michael was murdered, after revealing the King of Pop had named potential suspects in the event of his death.

“He mentioned it to me a few times… like people were out to kill him… and he would say names, saying these are the people who are trying to kill me,” Riley told the National Enquirer.

As soon as news of Jackson’s passing broke, Riley said he immediately called the singer’s family to alert them to the possibility he might have been killed.

“I said, ‘Listen, he was murdered. Somebody didn’t like something Jackson said or something he’s doing or didn’t want him to go to the top, so they had to get rid of him.’ We’ve got so many people we think it could be. It’s going to come out. You’re going to find out.”

Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin

“Smile” is a pop song, originally used as an instrumental theme in the soundtrack for the 1936 Charlie Chaplin movie Modern Times. Chaplin composed the music, while the words were written by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. In the lyrics, the singer is telling the listener to cheer up and that there is always a bright tomorrow, just as long as they smile. “Smile” has become a popular standard since its original use in Chaplin’s film.

Rolling Stone Report

Rolling with Will.i.am

As you’re reading this, Black Eyed Pea and producer to the stars Will.i.am is locked away in a New York City recording studio working with Michael Jackson on the Gloved One’s highly anticipated comeback album. Last week, we reported that Jackson is in town plotting his return, and now as Will.i.am’s solo album Songs About Girls is about to hit record stores, Will tells us, “We’re taking it day by day, we’ve finished some songs. I like what I’m doing, I’m really happy with it, but it’s not my project to talk about. I could be talking about song titles what they sound like and be excited about it, but those songs I made may not make his record and then I look like an idiot.”
