Though Janet Jackson had not performed the choreography from “Scream” since she and her brother Michael shot the video in 1995, it couldn’t have been a more fitting tribute to him. Jackson talked about the making of that video along with how she prepared for the Video Music Awards in the half-hour special “The Making of Janet Jackson’s VMA Tribute Performance,” which aired on September 19.
According to Janet, “Scream” was a turning point for Michael, who used the video to express frustration over his legal troubles. ” ‘Scream,’ there was so much going on at that time,” Jackson recalled. “That’s when the I hate to say this but — the first allegations [of child molestation] came out and the whole bit. He was very upset and very angry and he had so much pent up in him that he wanted to get out and say. And when you listen to the lyrics, that’s what it’s about.”
Cristan Leenon “Cris” Judd (born August 15, 1969) is an American actor and choreographer from Abilene, Texas known in celebville for his brief marriage to Jennifer Lopez.
Early years
Before Hollywood, Judd spent his early years growing up on Air Force bases in Angeles City in the Philippines and Hawaii. His mother is Filipino, his father Larry is Portuguese. The Air Force then moved his family to Niceville, Florida, where he attended Niceville High School. While in Florida, Judd, an avid athlete, spent a lot of time surfing and golfing. With a golf handicap of four, he even considered going pro after graduation, but instead decided to go to college. While in college, he landed his first job at Disney World with friend and colleague, Wayne Brady.
Dance career
At age 21, Judd became interested in dance. Within a year, he switched jobs and began dancing professionally with Disney.
Michael Jackson
With CRIS’ fame on the rise, his creative and performing skills were brought to the attention of MTV and Michael Jackson. His appearance with the entertainer at the 1995 MTV Video Awards led to his becoming one of the lead dancers on Michael Jackson’s Dangerous and History world tours, where he performed with the music icon in front of some of the biggest concert crowds in history at the height of Michael Jackson’s career.
About four minutes into the tribute to Michael Jackson at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Janet Jackson burst onstage to jam to “Scream,” the duet they recorded together in 1995. It was the crowning moment in an all-star homage to MJ that included a dance number helmed by renowned choreographers.
If you enjoyed watching the tribute, Janet enjoyed performing just as much.
“This is the most fun — from my mouth to God’s ears — the most fun I have ever had working on a project for TV,” Janet told MTV.
But how did the whole tribute come together?
Our cameras were there from the first day of rehearsals in Los Angeles to a relaxing BBQ with Janet and her team of choreographers to the last seconds before they took the VMA stage at New York’s Radio City Music Hall to bring the house down with the performance of a lifetime. For the first time, Janet opened up to our cameras and shared her feelings about her brother and this special tribute.
Madonna called Michael Jackson a “hero,” a “king” and a “human being” as she opened MTV’s 26th Annual Video Music Awards with a tribute to the King of Pop on Sunday night.
Madge described her early friendship with MJ and said she regretted losing touch with her old friend over time.
“For one reason or another we fell out of touch, then the witch hunt began and it seemed like one story after another came out about Michael,” Madonna said in speaking to the audience.
She said: “When Michael Jackson was six, he became a superstar and was perhaps the world’s most beloved child.
“When I was six, my mother died. I think he got the shorter stick. I never had a mother but he never had a childhood. When you never get to have something you become obsessed by it. I spent years searching for mother figures. But how do you recreate your childhood when you are under the magnifying glass of the world for your entire life?
“There is no question that he was one of the greatest talents the world has ever known. Michael Jackson was a hero.”
Janet Jackson To Pay Tribute To Michael At The VMAs
Janet will help kick off the awards show, which airs live Sunday at 9 p.m.
Travis Payne
Following Jackson’s sudden death in June, his sister Janet will return to the VMA stage to pay musical tribute to her brother. On Sunday, Janet — who has won nine VMAs — will make a special appearance at the VMAs to help open the show and honor MJ’s career. Previous reports noting that choreographer Frank Gaston is involved are erroneous.
According to TMZ, Jackson has been rehearsing a tribute set to air live at MTV’s VMAs on Sunday, September 13th. The number is reportedly part-choreographed by Travis Payne, who worked with Jackson on his “HIStory” World Tour and “This Is It” concerts. Jackson will reportedly be joined by 20 backup dancers, who have been rehearsing as much as 15 hours a day.
