Interviews

Here you can read a comment on that topic by Michael himself (Taken from the Interview “MJ Talks To Oprah”, ):

Oprah: OK, but you are in something there, there’s a picture of you, where did that come from? How did it get started?

MJ: That’s… I did a commercial for Pepsi and I was burned very badly and we settled for 1 million dollars and I gave all the money…like, we built this place called the Michael Jackson Burn Centre and that’s a piece of technology used for burn victims, right. So I’m looking at the piece of technology and decide to go inside it and just to hammer around, somebody takes the picture, when they process the pictures the person who processes the picture says. “Oh, Michael Jackson”. He made a copy and these pictures went all over the world with this lie attached to it. It’s a complete lie [...].

[...] It’s crazy. Why would I want to sleep in a chamber?

September 2006 GQ ISSUE

About the time his then girlfriend, Shar Jackson, got pregnant with their first child, Federline booked a gig dancing in Michael Jackson’s “You Rock My World” video. He leans in as he describes how one day, after rehearsal, they got a call saying Michael was on his way. “You felt him coming into the room before he even opened the door,” he says. “Everybody got quiet. I remember sitting there listening to the buzzing of the lights in the studio. He sits down, crosses his legs, looks at everybody, and is like, ‘I want to see it.’ He can hear if you’re off by your steps. He’s the master of that shit.”

The former Philippine first lady, Imelda Marcos, said she cried on hearing the news.

“Michael Jackson enriched our lives, made us happy,” she said in a statement. “The accusations, the persecution caused him so much financial and mental anguish. He was vindicated in court, but the battle took his life. There is probably a lesson here for all of us.”

Issue: Jan-Feb 2010

Last year was a tough one for pop princess Janet Jackson. But in the wake of losing her older brother Michael in June, she has forged ahead, immersing herself in a plethora of projects. As a result, 2010 will be one of her most prolific years to date: a new fi lm, Why Did I Get Married Too? with Tyler Perry (the sequel to 2007’s Why Did I Get Married?, for which she won critical praise), due in April; a new as-yet-untitled book; a new album (her 11th) out this year; and a rumored new romance (the 43-year-old ended a seven-year relationship with music producer Jermaine Dupri last year).

You already know that her chart-topping albums are introspective (Damita JoThe Velvet Rope), socially conscious (Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814), revealing (Discipline), feisty (Control) and sensual (janet.)—all of which have ranked her among the top musical artists of all time. And she’s broken ground with her mesmerizing performances, innovative choreography, music videos and undeniable talent. What you might not know is that Jackson is a vegan, incredibly personable, grounded, softspoken and the backbone of her family as she lives a low-key life in New York City. We sat down to discuss her new year.

GOTHAM: What have you taken away from Michael’s death?

JANET JACKSON: When you hear people say life goes on, it’s really the truth. You can’t stop living. It becomes a part of you. I feel a bit selfish because there are times I feel I shouldn’t be doing this, but I enjoy my work and I have to keep doing it. I have to keep my life going. There are days that are harder than others.

G: You were filming Why Did I Get Married Too? during your brother’s tragedy….

JJ: There was a lot of drama going into it on my end. I actually went from Michael’s service—that first service we had—and left that night to go back to work. It was tough, but at the same time, it was kind of therapeutic, too. It was a good way for me to move forward and stay busy. And I love acting—it was my fi rst love. I had my first job at seven. I got a recording contract when I was 14, so I thought I was going to be an actress. I’m really blessed.

Singer, songwriter and performer Siedah Garrett has written for everyone from Aretha Franklin to Vanessa Williams, but she will always be known for her hit duet “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” with Michael Jackson and for cowriting “Man In The Mirror” with him.

What is a specific memory do you have of working with Michael Jackson?

SIEDAH GARRETT: I remember the recording of our duet, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” at Westlake Studios in Hollywood. At one point, during the recording, I remember Michael tossing popcorn at me, once I’d closed my eyes to sing my verses. That would make us both laugh, because he knew that I was trying to do my best to impress both him and Quincy [Jones], trying to sing my heart out, and here he was tossing food at me. Mind you, we had only just met, and began to hang out as we recorded! His joy was two-fold, I would mess up a line, and we’d both start laughing, and Quincy would inevitably say, “Come on now, Sid, you’re wasting studio time!” And that would make Michael laugh even more!

The first glimpse of the Colgate smile and Adonis physique of Taimak as Bruce Leroy Green in “The Last Dragon” caused an epidemic of lovesickness among young impressionable girls and grown-behind women alike that has spanned for nearly 30 years. Throughout the years, Taimak (pronounced tie-mok) has been pretty low key, starring in off-Broadway plays, teaching martial arts and traveling the world. As he gears up to share his story on TV One’s “Life After,” ESSENCE.com caught up with the heartthrob to talk about the role that changed his life, surviving dark moments, and what really happened between him and his former leading ladies Vanity and Janet Jackson.

ESSENCE.COM: Taimak “Will you show me some moves?” Guarriello, where the heck have you been?
TAIMAK:(Laughs.) I’ve been embracing everything that’s good and bad. Doing theatre, teaching, and growing as a human being.

ESSENCE.COM: Why haven’t we seen much of you on the big screen since that film?
TAIMAK: Hollywood just wasn’t giving me a break. I used to ask myself, “What energy am I putting out that might be preventing me from getting work?”, I know I’m not perfect by any margin, but I do think I’m talented and can contribute as an actor.I even thought, do I have to be dark-skinned, play basketball, football, rap talk “Black”?Back in the day I believe that Black men were more worldly and open to different things other then just that. It was okay for them to have many different perspectives and interest; I think “Hollywood” was looking for one kind of brother. It’s a kind of club, and until you know how to play the game you’re not going to be let in. So I decided I wasn’t going to pursue Hollywood anymore and that’s when I began to enjoy acting and life in general.

ESSENCE.COM: So what did you discover since that happened?
TAIMAK: I’ve been in conversation with Kerry Gordy, Berry Gordy’s son, about the Sony Pictures remake of “The Last Dragon” and my role in it, Samuel L. Jackson is signed to play Sho’nuff. This time around they didn’t include so much comedy, and they’re still looking for a director and Bruce Leroy and more. Although I can’t speak on my role, it will be something completely different, but they’ve been really great about consulting with me and asking for my input.

other The Soul-Train-Dancers-Jeffery Daniels

The influence of Jeffrey Daniel and the American ‘Soul Train’ T.V. dancers, is evident in the moves of Usher, Justin Timberlake, and Sisqo. This generation of stars were in turn influenced by Michael Jackson. Jackson was a big fan of ‘Soul Train’. He soon met, learned from, and later hired dancer/choreographers from the Soul Train T.V. show. One of those young dancers was 17 year old Jeffrey Daniel.
