Celebrity Donny Osmond

Donnie Osborne speaks to ET

On the one-year anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death, Donny Osmond shares his memories of the late King of Pop, and he opens up about his sister Marie’s healing process following the loss of her son.

“My fondest memory with Michael, we were both 14 years old, and it was right after the first American Music Awards; we presented an award,” Donny tells ET. “And we thought, ‘We’re hungry!’ So we hopped in the back of my limo, drove to Jack-in-the-Box, and we were sticking our heads out the moon roof eating tacos and driving down Sunset Blvd. We were both laughing our heads off.”

“It’s still hard for me to imagine a year after his death that he’s still gone, that Michael isn’t with us,” Donny adds. “But his music lives on. Michael will always be with us.”

Of course, Donny, a father of five with grandchildren, often thinks of Michael’s children, who are now in the care of their grandmother Katherine Jackson.

“She is such a loving woman. I’ve known her a long, long time. Anytime a child can be raised by grandma, you can’t go wrong,” he says.

Ben is a number-one hit song written by Don Black and Walter Scharf and recorded by Michael Jackson for the Motown label in 1972.

Originally written for Donny Osmond, “Ben” was offered to Jackson as Osmond was on tour at the time and unavailable for recording.

The single, theme of a 1972 film of the same name (the sequel to the 1971 killer rat movie Willard), spent one week at the top of the U.S. pop chart. It also reached number-one on the Australian pop chart, spending eight weeks at the top spot. The song also later reached a peak of number seven on the British pop chart.

The song became the first of 13 number-one pop hits for Jackson in the United States and his first number-one as a solo artist; it was later included on Jackson’s album of the same name.

“Ben” won a Golden Globe for Best Song. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1973; Jackson performed the song in front of a live audience at the ceremony.

Although Jackson had already become the youngest artist to ever record a number-one (“I Want You Back” with The Jackson 5, in 1970), “Ben” made him the third-youngest solo artist, at fourteen, to score a number-one hit single.

Only Stevie Wonder, who was thirteen when “Fingertips, Pt. 2″ went to number one, and Donny Osmond, who was months shy of his fourteenth birthday when “Go Away Little Girl” hit number one in 1971 were younger.

Digital Spy Report:

Donny Osmond has pleaded with the media and public to leave Michael Jackson alone.

Jackson has dominated the headlines since he passed away on June 25 as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of his death.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the former teen idol said: “I wish they’d leave it alone. Mike’s in a good place, let’s leave it at that. He had a hard life. He’s having a harder death.

“Leave Michael alone. He was a great entertainer and he contributed so much to pop culture and let’s remember his music and leave it at that.”

Marie Osmond added:

“It’s the children that are being affected and we have enough things we can talk about in this world… Kids get affected by all this stuff and they have to let those kids be kids now.”
